The Face of Wisdom

Recently my husband headed out the door to help a friend with a difficult situation; and as he left, besides the usual “I love you more,” I also said, “Please be careful, prayerful, and wise. I’ll be praying that for you.”

As I’ve thought about my words, I’m ashamed that those exact words have never come out of my mouth before. I have confidence in my husband’s human wisdom, but I felt this situation needed more than that – this situation required God’s wisdom. But then, wouldn’t EVERY situation and conversation benefit from God’s wisdom? God’s Word has even provided us with a promise about seeking God’s wisdom: “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting…”(James 1:5-6)

Even Solomon, when asked if there was anything he wanted from God, asked for wisdom. In the early years of his reign, he was fully aware that he needed more than his own wisdom – He needed God’s wisdom.

“Now grant me wisdom and knowledge so that I may lead these people, for who can judge this great people of yours?” (1 Chronicles 1:10)

We know that God granted his request, because even today he is remembered as one of the wisest men ever!

As Solomon continues his reflections, he makes this interesting statement: “Who is like the wise person, and who knows the interpretation of a matter? A person’s wisdom brightens his face, and the sternness of his face is changed.” (Ecclesiastes 8:1 CSB)

In this passage, Solomon points out the effect wisdom even has on one’s countenance – brightening and softening the face! From that description, we can surmise that godly wisdom doesn’t scream, doesn’t display a hate face, and doesn’t look foolish. The Message puts it this way: “Wisdom puts light in the eyes and gives gentleness to words and manners.”

Is that the kind of wisdom you’re seeking? Is your countenance reflecting the light and gentleness of godly wisdom? Are you in a situation where you realize that your wisdom is not enough? That’s just where God wants you. Now… seek His wisdom in faith believing – and it’s yours. He promised.
