Dealing with Authority

Some people are placed in positions of authority before they are ready for that responsibility. They have not yet figured out how to lead well and build a team – and instead, act as if the title “boss” means “bossy.” A good boss is like a good coach – wanting to bring out the best in the team, positioning each team member in a task for which they are well-suited and well-trained, and encouraging them in their work. Most of us have observed both types of leadership.

Solomon gives us some wisdom about serving under those in authority: “I advise you always to obey the king’s command. Do this because you made a promise to God. Don’t be too quick to quit the job the king gave you. But don’t support something that is wrong. Remember, the king does whatever he pleases. The king is the highest power. No one can tell him what to do.” (Ecclesiastes 8:2-4)

Unfortunately, some people in leadership are not leading with integrity. They may do wrong and expect their employees to go right along with it. What are some options when a leader asks us to support unethical practices?

·      You could put up with the situation – choosing to go along to get along – not willing to risk potential job loss.

·      You could become a rebel – doing what the boss says but working behind the scenes to undermine that leader.

·      You could respond wisely – trusting God to lead you to deal with this person so that ultimate good comes from it – bathing the situation in prayer, seeking God’s wisdom, treating the authority figure with respect, but not compromising your values. Proverbs 16:7 tells us this: “When a person’s ways please the Lord, he makes even his enemies to be at peace with him.”

·      You could resign – there are times when your best option may be to walk away as you realize that the unethical standards of that company might eventually rub off on you. When you decide to step away from the position, the way you do it is as important as the fact that you’re doing it. So, do it with gentleness, grace, and a kind spirit.

So… when we find ourselves under the authority of someone else, let’s challenge ourselves to show respect (to the degree that we can), do our work with excellence, stand up for God-breathed values, and most of all, trust that when we please the Lord, He will work all things together for good.
