The Ask

The Ask
What would be your three wishes if a genie popped out of a lamp and offered them to you? Wealth? Health? It can be fun to think about having the power to receive anything that you want.
Young Solomon was actually given a similar opportunity in 1 Kings 3:5: At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon during the night in a dream, and God said, “Ask for whatever you want me to give you” (NIV).
God, it should be noted, is in no way, shape or form a genie. He is God, Creator of the Universe and Author of Life. We can assume that He knew Solomon’s heart and answer before He even asked.
Solomon asked for wisdom and discernment to lead God’s people. God granted this request (and more). God desires to give His children their requests.
Jesus said, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in Heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!” (Matthew 7:7-11 NIV)
Re-read Jesus words, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened” (vv.7-8).
We have been given the same opportunity that Solomon had to receive whatever we want from God. We, in fact, have the power to receive anything that we want.
But are we asking for discernment? Are we asking for boldness to share our faith? Are we asking for God’s will to be done?
You see, the same God who granted Solomon his “ask” wants to grant your “ask” as well.
What is your ask?
