One, Two, Three
New Title
One, Two, Three
One, as many of us know, is the loneliest number. It’s such a lonely number that many of you are now singing the song in your head. “One is the loneliest number… it's the saddest experience you'll ever know.”
Solomon couldn’t agree more with Three Dog Night.
Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up! Again, if two lie together, they keep warm, but how can one keep warm alone? (Ecclesiastes 4:9-11 ESV)
Solomon points out the obvious disadvantage experienced by those who go through life alone; a person who is alone will have no one to pick them up when they fall or to keep them warm against the cold.
If Solomon were alive today, I think he would be dismayed that we choose to use technology to such an extent that we isolate ourselves from our families and friends. The dopamine pleasure that we receive from technology prevents us from experiencing the connection that we all so desperately need. This makes it difficult to stand against life’s problems and the enemy’s schemes.
Ecclesiastes 4:12 provides insight for today’s society in how to combat the pull of isolation: And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him—a threefold cord is not quickly broken (ESV).
In community with others, we find support. In community with fellow Christians, we can withstand those who seek to prevail against us. For where two (or more) are gathered in Christ’s name, He is there with them (Matthew 18:20). And a cord of three is not quickly broken.
Friend, have you isolated yourself with technology? Put your phone down. Shut off your screen. Find a fellow believer and live!
Or maybe, your circumstances have made it hard to cultivate friendships with people and you have simply given up. If so, know that there are many others in the same boat as you! There are stay-at-home moms desperate for adult conversation. There are people in retirement homes and nursing homes that need a friend. There are foster youth in residential centers that need a friend. Get out there! Offer friendship to others and bring Jesus with you.
You see, one is the loneliest number. Two is better than one. But three is the best.
