It's not What You Know...

“My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:8-9 NLT)

Around my house, I’m known for being pretty good at solving puzzles on Wheel of Fortune. My family often tells me I should go on the show. I always feel especially proud when I figure out the puzzle before the three contestants know the answer. (Truthfully, that doesn’t happen as often as I would like.) But I’ll be the first to admit I certainly don’t know everything. Not even close. Most of us rely heavily on Google and Siri to answer our countless questions. Yet, even with so much information readily available, we can’t even begin to comprehend why certain things happen as they do. Thankfully, we know the One who does!

God doesn’t just know a lot of things about a bunch of stuff; His wisdom and knowledge are limitless and infinite. Oh, how great are God’s riches and wisdom and knowledge! How impossible it is for us to understand his decisions and his ways! (Romans 11:33). What a comfort it is to know that our God is holy, good, loving, wise, and unchanging. Though we cannot see beyond the here and now, our Heavenly Father has known the number of our days from the very beginning (Psalm 139:16). He is perfect in all knowledge (Job 37:16). We can trust him with our uncertainties because he cares for us (1 Peter 5:7).

The Lord’s ways are exceedingly higher than ours—far beyond what we could even imagine (Isaiah 55:8). Even so, our Father invites us to draw near to Him, to know Him more! We can bring our questions to Him when we feel frustrated by what we do not understand. We are incapable of having all knowledge, but we can rest in the assurance and hope that the future is in the hands of our loving Heavenly Father. For who can know the Lord’s thoughts? Who knows enough to give him advice? For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things (Romans 11:34, 36a).

Today, let’s ask the Lord to help us remember that though we are limited creatures, we can trust Him completely with what we do not understand because He knows and loves us perfectly.

Led by the Spirit For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. (Romans 8:14) Paul’s assertion here is simple: those who are led by the Spirit are God’s children. Being led by the Spirit is evidence of genuine faith, evidence of the redemptive work of Christ. The opposite is also true. Those who are not being led by the Spirit are not the children of God. Being led by the Spirit is not an option that the believer can choose or decline; it is essential to the child of God. So, what does it mean to be “led by the Spirit?” We tend to think of this in a very task-oriented or transactional way. We have a decision to make that we do not feel we can make on our own, so we turn to God for guidance. We are trying to decide what house to buy, whether we should relocate for a job, or make some other decision where we realize that our choice will have long-lasting consequences. We want to know God’s will in making these big decisions. We want Him, through His Spirit, to lead us (or, honestly, just to give
