The UN-common Christian Part 4: Confirmed by The Spirit

Even as Peter was saying these things, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who were listening to
the message. The Jewish believers who came with Peter were amazed that the gift of
the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles, too. (Acts 10:44-45)
As we come to the climax of this historical moment between Peter and Cornelius it’s
difficult to overstate just how awkward it would have been for Cornelius and his family at
the onset of Peter’s arrival. Don’t forget, Peter is a Rockstar! His reputation is legend.
This is Peter who walked on water. This is Peter who stood up and cut off the soldiers
ear. This is Peter who Jesus put in charge of the church in Jerusalem. This is Peter who
spoke truth to Power and led over 5000 to faith in Christ. To say that Cornelius and his
family are excited to meet Peter is an understatement.
Now with that in mind, think about the most offensive thing you could say to someone
for the first time, multiply that by ten and you have Peter’s greeting to Cornelius and his
entire household. It’s hard for me to even write this, but here it goes:
Peter told them, “You know it is against our laws for a Jewish man to enter a Gentile
home like this or to associate with you (Acts 10:28).
So let this sink in…it’s been 10 years since Jesus was crucified, buried and raised and
in that time Peter has not once entered into the home of a Non-Jew. Peter is so hard
wired to submission to the Old Covenant that he is still adding things to the equation of
his salvation. So instead of “Jesus + Nothing = Salvation,” it’s "Jesus + Food Laws” or
“Jesus + Avoiding Gentiles (like Cornelius).” So, with that said, why does Peter make
the trip from Joppa to Caesarea? Well, we don’t have to guess…Peter tells us:
But God has shown me that I should no longer think of anyone as impure or unclean.
So I came without objection as soon as I was sent for. Now tell me why you sent for
me.” (Acts 10:28-29)
And how did God show Peter that Cornelius had been transformed from unclean to
uncommon? Cornelius was confirmed by the Spirit which amazed Peter and all who
were with him!
Q: What do you sometimes add to the equation of your Salvation? Jesus + What?
Q: Read Galatians 1:10. Whose confirmation are you seeking?
