In our walk with God, there are moments when His call becomes crystal clear. Acts 13:3

provides us with a powerful example of how to respond in such moments: So after they had

fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off.

This verse comes immediately after the Holy Spirit's directive to set apart Barnabas and Saul for

a special work. What's striking is the church's response - there was no delay, no committee

formed to discuss the practicalities, no waiting for a more convenient time. They acted promptly

and decisively in obedience to God's call.

As modern believers, we can learn much from this example of faithful obedience. Here are

some key lessons:

1. Recognize God's Voice: The church at Antioch was attuned to the Holy Spirit's leading. They

had created an environment of worship and fasting that allowed them to clearly discern God's

voice. In our lives, we need to cultivate this same sensitivity to God's leading through regular

prayer, Bible study, and times of quiet reflection.

2. Respond Promptly: Once they heard God's call, the church acted swiftly. Delayed obedience

can often become disobedience. When God speaks, the time to act is now. This doesn't mean

we should be rash, but rather that we should move forward in faith once we're certain of God's

leading.

3. Act Decisively: The church didn't just give Barnabas and Saul their blessing; they actively

participated in sending them off. They laid hands on them, a symbolic act of commissioning and

support. Our obedience should be wholehearted and decisive.

4. Accept the Cost: Sending off Barnabas and Saul meant losing two key leaders. Obedience

often comes with a cost, but the church was willing to pay it for the sake of God's mission. We

too must be prepared to sacrifice comfort, security, or status when God calls.

5. Trust in God's Plan: By sending off Barnabas and Saul, the church demonstrated trust in

God's larger plan, even if they couldn't see all the details. Obedience often requires stepping

into the unknown, trusting that God knows best.

The story of Barnabas and Saul (who becomes Paul) shows us the incredible impact that can

result from faithful obedience. Their missionary journeys led to the spread of the Gospel

throughout the Roman world, the establishment of numerous churches, and the writing of much

of the New Testament.

As you reflect on this passage, consider: Is there an area in your life where God is calling you to

obedient action? What might be holding you back? How can you cultivate a heart that's ready to

respond promptly to God's call?
