Simplify

uly 12th is National Simplicity Day -- a day dedicated to stepping back from the busyness of modern life and focusing on what truly matters. July 12th was chosen because it’s the birthday of writer and philosopher Henry David Thoreau who wrote Walden and was known for his advocacy of simple living. Walden emphasized the importance of reducing distractions and focusing on the essentials in life.

As believers, how might we “celebrate” National Simplicity Day?

Simplify to enjoy God’s goodness

Today is a great day to simply enjoy God’s goodness. Take some time to reflect on His blessings, even if you are going through hardship. Take some time to enjoy nature. Although July is HOT, this is a perfect time to stop and notice the beautiful flowers and trees. If you are heading to the beach, marvel in the power of the ocean (and remember me who wishes she were at the beach). If you are headed to the mountains, be in awe of their majesty (and remember me who loves mountains even more than the beach).

In His hand are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to Him. The sea is His, for He made it, and His hands formed the dry land. (Psalm 95:4-5)

The heavens declare the glory of God, the skies proclaim the work of His hands. (Psalm 19:1)

Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let the sea resound, and all that is in it. Let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them; let all the trees of the forest sing for joy. (Psalm 96:11-12)

Simplify our faith walk

Have we made our faith walk complicated? Have we put rules and expectations on ourselves that are not truly from God?

In the book of Matthew, we read what a Pharisee asked Jesus and His response:

“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?”

And He said to him, “You shall love the Lord you God with all you heart and with all your soul and with all you mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.” (Matthew 22:36-40)

Where do we need to simplify and get rid of the noise and distractions that keep us from fully enjoying all God’s blessings? Let’s focus on the essentials, and let’s prioritize taking time with God to just be in His presence – to reflect on His blessings and to breathe.

Be still and know that I am God. (Psalm 46:10)
