Resting in His Presence
New Title
“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” (Psalm 46:10)
This summer our family found ourselves in a situation we could not control; what started out as a fun day ended up in the Emergency Department with my daughter being transferred by ambulance to her children’s hospital three hours away. Her heart was under stress, and she was experiencing rejection of her transplanted heart.
There was nothing I could do to get her out of this situation but to pray and to trust God.
The Lord quietly whispered to my heart over the following weeks that I must be still.
For God’s people, being still would mean going to God for help, stopping frantic activity as one commentary says, and remembering who He is. We don’t have to wrestle with fear trying to figure out how we are going to handle things on our own, but we can be still and trust that God is who He says He is. There is freedom in letting go, being still before God and letting Him fight your battles.
We not only need to be still before God, but we need to know that He is God. By knowing God, we can have a better understanding and know that He is trustworthy. We can know God and have this understanding of Him by going straight to the Bible.
Here are a few things we can know about God by reading His Word:
· God is God (Psalm 100:3).
· God is the Creator of the Heavens and Earth; and if He is in control of the Universe, He can take care of us, too! (Genesis 1:1, Psalm 146:6)
· God knows the exact number of hairs on your head. This is how much He loves us. (Luke 12:7)
· God is our refuge, strength, and helper. (Psalm 46:1-3)
When we know these truths about God, we do not have to be afraid. Anytime I am filled with fear, God reminds me of who He is.
Going through that time of uncertainty this past summer with my daughter – not knowing if her new heart was failing – I had to be still and not seek to control the situation with endless worry. I could rest and find comfort that God was fighting this battle. He is God, the Creator of Heaven and Earth, and the Creator of YOU.
