Meet Bezalel
Meet Bezalel

As someone with a firm footing in middle age, I’ve seen some stuff. I have had millions of conversations, read a mountain of books, and listened to hundreds of sermons and podcasts. And I can’t remember hearing one person talk about Bezalel. Not one. No one has ever said, “I can’t wait to meet Bezalel when I get to heaven!” or given a verse from Exodus 31 as their life verse. We read through the Bible and think, “Cool. He did that” and simply move on.
Roll up your sleeves and crack your knuckles. We are going to learn about him together.
The Lord said to Moses, “See I have called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, son of Hur of the tribe of Judah, and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with ability and intelligence, with knowledge and all craftsmanship, to devise artistic designs, to work in gold, silver, and bronze, in cutting stones for setting, and in carving wood, to work in every craft.” (Exodus 31:1-5)
Here are five things to know about Bezalel:
- Son of Uri and grandson of Hur from the tribe of Judah. Uri and Hur are both mentioned a few times in the Old Testament, which indicates their prominence at that time. Their kids are also mentioned, so it continued. Lastly, Bezalel came from that tribe (Judah) from which Jesus was born.
- He was a triple threat – filled with the Holy Spirit, ability, and intelligence!
- Bezalel was a craftsman. He had a working knowledge of many forms of craftsmanship – design, fashioning gold, silver, bronze, and gemstones. This would be a valuable specialty during those days.
- While more common at the time, he was also a skilled carpenter.
- He was chosen.
Bezalel was one of those people that never saw a scrap of wood as a scrap, but as a future cutting board. He wouldn’t ever think something wasn’t useful or beautiful. Not only creative, he also had the working knowledge of how to handle a wide variety of materials. So… he was the perfect choice for God and for what was next.
Lord, today we are learning more about one of your amazing creations, Bezalel. His creativity and faith put him in the perfect place to be called by You. What a beautiful life. Amen
