The name Zechariah means “God remembers”. We find that truth woven into the narrative of

Luke chapter 1.

In the story of Zechariah and Elizabeth, you see that God remembers the faithfulness and

petitions of His children. The delay in answering was not about God forgetting or ignoring their

petition; it was about how the tapestry of their lives would be woven into the greater tapestry of

His redemptive purpose. As Gabriel describes the mission of John to prepare the way of the

Lord, you see the promise of the Messiah coming into focus. And in the coming of the Messiah,

there are so many promises that are fulfilled.

The reality is that we serve a God who is in the business of making and keeping covenants.

He is the LORD our God; his judgments are in all the earth. He remembers his covenant

forever, the word that he commanded, for a thousand generations. (Psalm 105:7-8 ESV)

What does it mean when we say, “God remembers?” When you or I say that we remember

something, it often implies that we have forgotten for some period. The thing we remember

today may be forgotten again in the future. That is not at all what it means when we say, “God

remembers.”

When we say, “God remembers”, it means that God has never forgotten and will never forget.

The pages of scripture are filled with the record of God’s faithfulness to His promises, and that

track record is an absolute guarantee that He will always be found faithful.

Perhaps you find yourself in a spot where you don’t see God at work, or you are waiting on an

answer and don’t hear His voice. Maybe there is that purpose or calling that God has spoken to

your heart about, but you don’t see the next step or how that’s going to come together. Be

confident in this: He is at work, and He hasn’t forgotten.
