Futility
New Title
“There is futility that is done on the earth: there are righteous people who get what the actions of the wicked deserve, and there are wicked people who get what the action of the righteous deserve. I say that this too is futile.” (Ecclesiastes 8:14)
“The Lord despises those who acquit the guilty and condemn the innocent.” (Proverbs 17:15)
“Destruction is certain for those who say evil is good and good is evil; that dark is light and light is dark.” (Isaiah 5:20)
Those verses could have been pulled from the 24/7 news cycles of today. Just when we think we’ve heard it all, along comes another level of atrocity and evil that we could never have imagined – even today reading of thousands of Christians being slaughtered in Nigeria. Good people are punished or executed, and evil people are cheered in the streets – and on social media!
Just before The Flood, God made this observation:
“The Lord observed the extent of human wickedness on the earth, and he saw that everything they thought or imagined was consistently and totally evil. So the Lord was sorry He had ever made them and put them on the earth. It broke His heart.” (Genesis 6:5-6)
God saw that human evil was out of control. Day and night, the people thought evil and imagined evil… and it… broke… His… heart.
Knowing that the evil in Noah’s day broke His heart is somehow comforting to me. Because I know that if He hated that evil, and it broke His heart (as today’s evil must also do), He will eventually do something about it.
The prophet Isaiah tells us in the verse above that destruction is certain for those who say evil is good and good is evil. Certain. Not maybe. Certain. God WILL ultimately right every wrong.
In the meantime, will you trust Him to work in and through you, so you can be a light in the midst of the darkness and evil of today?
