Embarrassed
New Title
Middle school was the worst. It was filled with embarrassing moments as I transformed from child into young adult. The most embarrassing moment of all happened on a youth trip in front of my youth minister -- the youth minister who just happened to be filming the event.
One can only imagine that the woman who had an “issue of blood” for twelve years found herself in many embarrassing situations. She was in those situations for twelve years.
It’s no wonder that she kind of snuck up on Jesus to touch His robe. She probably touched it and then tried to blend into the crowd. She had faith; she knew Jesus could heal her; but she was embarrassed.
Jesus, however, thought this would be a great time to make an example of her. He wanted to know who touched Him because He knew that His power had healed someone.
When the woman saw that she was discovered, she came trembling and fell down before Him. In the presence of all the people, she declared the reason she had touched Him and how she was instantly cured. “Daughter,” He said to her, “your faith has made you well. Go in peace.” (Luke 8:47-48)
In the presence of everyone, the woman shared her testimony. She shared her problem, what led her to touch the garment and her healing. The woman who hid in shame a few moments before, publicly proclaimed her faith in Jesus.
Jesus stated that it was her faith that had healed her. He restored her body in private but restored her reputation in public.
The woman who had been embarrassed for twelve years was now known as a woman of faith. Imagine what would have happened, however, if she had allowed her embarrassment to keep her from Jesus. She may have still believed that He was the Messiah and capable of healing her but held back for fear of what others would say.
If we aren’t careful, we can allow embarrassment over our sin or our situation to keep us from acting on our faith. Jesus might be the Savior of the World, and all that, but we are too embarrassed to reach out.
Throughout Scripture, God reassures us to come to Him.
Do not be afraid; you will not be put to shame. Do not fear disgrace; you will not be humiliated. (Isaiah 54:4)
As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.” (Romans 10:11)
Put aside your embarrassment today and reach out to Jesus.
