Adopted
New Title

For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God… (Romans 8:15-16)
It was March 31, 2003, when we found ourselves in a courtroom in the city of Kemerovo, Russia for an adoption proceeding. My first memory of that proceeding was seeing the paperwork we had completed, had notarized and apostilled sitting in a large binder on the judge’s bench – a reminder that we had met all the requirements and done all we could do to bring us to this moment. I was allowed to address the court, which of course was interpreted by Lena, who was both our interpreter and our advocate that day. Finally, the judge announced her decision, after which Lena turned to us and said “Congratulations, he is your son.” The adoption was complete, but the adventure had just begun.
We were able to pick Zak up from the orphanage the following afternoon. Melanie quickly changed him into an outfit we had brought from home. In just a few minutes we left behind old clothes and the orphanage and walked out the door into a brand-new life. The next day I returned to Kemerovo to pick up the final paperwork. In that packet was a birth certificate with our names listed as the parents. It was as if it had always been so. While the adoption was granted in a moment, it would take time for our son to realize what all that meant.
The same is true for those come to Christ. There is no requirement to understand all the theological details to be adopted into God’s family. All that needed to be done was accomplished by Christ in His death and resurrection. We need only confess our sin, believe in His finished work, and confess Him as Lord. At that moment, the Holy Spirit begins the work of sanctification, conforming us to the image of Christ, making it real to us that we have indeed been adopted into the family, that with all the redeemed of all the ages we can now cry out “Abba! Father!”
Perhaps you are reading this today and find yourself still wearing an ill-fitting life, living in the orphanage of sin. Let me assure you that God has a new life prepared for you, a life you cannot even begin to imagine – just on the other side of the door. Would you open the door to Him today and walk into a brand-new life? It’s a good day for an adoption.
